Vanuatu, through the Vanuatu Bureau Standards is a Correspondent Member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The VBS is also affiliated with:

• Pacific Quality Infrastructure (PQI) Initiative
• Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC)
• Other regional and global quality infrastructure bodies.

1. Trade Facilitation and Economic Development:
   • Meeting International Trade Obligations: As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Vanuatu has an obligation to implement the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement. The VBS's role is to ensure that Vanuatu's standards for goods and services align with international norms. This prevents unnecessary obstacles to trade and helps Vanuatu's exports, such as copra, cocoa, and kava, meet the quality and safety requirements of international markets.
   • Harmonizing Standards: By participating in bodies like the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), VBS can adopt and adapt internationally recognized standards. This reduces the need for Vanuatu to develop its own standards from scratch, saving time and resources. It also ensures that Vanuatu's products and services are consistent with global best practices, making them more competitive.
   • Building a Quality Infrastructure: These partnerships help the VBS to build and strengthen its own national quality infrastructure, which includes metrology (measurement science), accreditation, and conformity assessment. This is essential for ensuring that products are accurately tested and certified, which in turn builds consumer and trade partner confidence.
2. Regional Cooperation and Capacity Building:
   • Sharing Knowledge and Expertise: Organizations like the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) and PASC provide a platform for VBS to collaborate with other national standards bodies in the region. This allows them to share information, best practices, and resources, which is particularly important for small island developing states like Vanuatu.
   • Strengthening the "Blue Pacific" Vision: By working with the PIFS, the VBS contributes to the broader goals of regional cooperation and sustainable development, as outlined in the "2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent." This helps Vanuatu to address shared challenges such as climate change, economic resilience, and resource management.
3. Enhancing Consumer and Public Safety:
   • Ensuring Quality and Safety: Adopting and enforcing internationally recognized standards helps the VBS to protect the health and safety of Vanuatu's consumers. This includes everything from the quality of food and water to the safety of electrical appliances and construction materials.
   • Promoting Good Governance: The adherence to international standards and agreements also promotes transparency and good governance within the country's regulatory framework.

In essence, by joining these organizations, the VBS is not just adopting standards; it is securing a strategic position that facilitates trade, builds national capacity, and ensures a safer and more prosperous future for Vanuatu.
