What is a Standard?
A formal document developed by consensus and endorsed by a recognized organization that contains rules, guidelines, criteria, requirements, practices, and methods aimed at reaching the highest level of quality.
- Voluntary Standards
- Mandatory Standards
When organizations are not legally obligated to adhere to Standards, they are voluntary. Companies may decide to adhere to them to satisfy market or industry demands
When laws or regulations impose Standards, those Standards become mandatory.
